THE PERSONALITY
In contrast to both Ma Chao and Pang De he is nothing like either man. Ma Dai would in fact be the first to describe both me as being 'way too over the top' or serious. Ma Dai never likes to brood too much, instead he prefers to be light of heart and quick with the jokes. If asked to describe himself he would say he was 'the heart of the party' or perhaps just describe himself as being the ladies man of Xiliang. Certainly he would claim to see more action than the rest of those broody buggers put together.
Ma Dai does not lose his cheerful outlook on life even when in a crisis. This makes him generally very calm and collected. When everything falls apart he would be the first to tell his comrades too 'take a chill pill'. As a result he is very slow to anger and when he does get into a fight with his friends he is always the first to forgive and make up after wards.
When it comes to ambition some would say he lacks any besides getting into trouble and chatting up the ladies. This is not entirely accurate, he would prefer to say he easy to keep happy. As long as he reasonably wealthy and his family is taken care of Ma Dai has no real need for anything else. This makes him a very loyal officer to his cause and a hard man to exploit. Additionally he could be considered the tactician at least in his circle of friends. He is a little bit smarter than them and does not get worked up as easily making him harder to trick than say Ma Chao.
THE APPEARANCE
Ma Dai like much of his family has close blood ties with the people of Qiang. As a result he looked a little different than most pure Han Chinese. Although this is more apparent is his voice and love of horsemanship. He stands at 5'11 foot tall, making him taller than most although not so much as his cousin Ma Chao. As one would expect there is a course a resemblance between the two men. He shares his fit physical form and clear jade like skin causing some to describe him as the 'pretty boy' of shu. A term he considered to be endearing rather than offensive.
Although Ma Dai has been in a large number of battles and fights he is remarkably un scared. Which he would refer to as him just being lucky rather than skilled, a sign of either his modesty or good humor perhaps. He does however have a painted tattoo of a horse along his back, something he claims to share with his cousin and friend Pang De.
In battle Ma Dai prefers to ware light robes or armor, preferring mobility to heavy protection. In a practical sense he prefers to be light on his feet but still have enough protection to survive a hail of arrows. Most horsemen of course being a prime target for archers as they spent more time sitting there shouting 'hey look at me, iv got a horse.' than actually fighting.
THE HISTORY
Ma Dai was born in 183 into the Ma clan the ruling family of Xilang. His uncle Ma Teng was the local governor meaning his family were considered quite wealthy at least by local clans. Along with his cousin Ma Chao he learned horsemanship, archery and martial arts from a young age. Additionally he showed more attitude than most for scholar ship, although he really lacked the determination and hard working ethics required for that work if not the intelligence. Always choosing the easy way threw life he decided to become a warrior, quickly becoming one of his uncles generals even at a young age.
Ma Dai's first real battle was at Tong pass, where he faced off against the legions of Cao Cao. The warlord who controlled most of the central plains had learned that Ma Teng and Han Sui were plotting too attack him. Preempting this attack his marched his army against them. Ma Dai who was now old enough to fight took the Field with his friend Pang De and cousin Ma Chao. Initial the fighting went very well, leading multiple cavalry charges Ma Dai fought very well at his cousins side winning many small victories. However that all changed once Han Sui was accused of secret meetings with Cao Cao. Perhaps one of the very few to see this as an enemy ploy, perhaps due to his calm nature Ma Dai attempted to prevent a disaster. However his families sheer paranoia was too much, in the end the battle ended in defeat. Along with his cousin Ma Chao he ended up fleeing to Zhang Lu of Han Zhong.
Along with his cousin Ma Dai was sent to attack Liu Bei, who was assaulting Liu Zhang of Yi province. At Ji Meng pass they meet in battle with the forces of Shu. Always at his cousins side Ma Dai accompanied him during his famous duel against Zhang Fei. He was the one who beat the drums for his cousin and called him back when it got dark. Initially he even challenged Zhang Fei to a duel himself, but was refused as the warrior wanted to face his cousin instead. However before there was a clear winner Zhuge Liang plotted to incriminate Ma Chao, turning Zhang Lu against him. With no other choice he and Ma Dai surrendered to Liu Bei. Now taking his service with his new master Ma Dai serves at his cousins side as a warrior and tactician.
