Yuan Shao stepped out of the royal throne room in which he had been pondering. With his best advisors, he had devised a clever plan that was honourable, but indeed, clever. For Yuan Shao was a man of honour and integrity; in this world of chaos, if there were no men of their word and those who followed the basic etiquette of the nobility then this grand world would crumble. And Yuan Shao would not allow himself to be immersed in such underhanded tactics (in particular, fire).
Striding outside of the grand palace, he noticed the admiring gazes of the peasantry, but he did not acknowledge them. Time was money, and if Yuan Shao did speak to each peasant he met then much time would be wasted. In fact, he was convinced that it would take years to do such a thing. On his way to the barracks he saw a poor man lying there. The flies were already swarming to their new meal. He swiveled around in disgust; what kind of fool would allow themselves to fall in such a state?
After arriving at the barracks, he ordered the officers to gather all of the soldiers present in the vicinity. Yuan Shao grinned smugly, he had come up with an exceptional speech; one that would put Cao Cao's poetry to shame. After all, no one could surpass the God-King, could they?
"My soldiers, you have been gathered here at this point in time so that you may be informed of the upcoming plans. You are part of an army that cares, and as such I see it as necessary for you to understand what will be happening." He didn't know where the last few words came from, Yuan Shao thought that the peasantry were merely tools. Pawns on a chessboard would be an appropriate metaphor. "Rest assured, for your lives are being used for an appropriate purpose. A fool from the Wall has risen up against our noble clan. He plots war, he plots against our families, he plots against the new-found peace in the north." Some cries of outrage grew from the crowd. "We even tried to negotiate with this man, but how does he treat our emissary? He returns him alive, but now handicapped. Our army could easily crush the barbarians that he calls an army, but as many of you are aware, we are under threat from the Xianbei Confederacy." Cries of horror were heard and grimaces were visible among the crowd. "While we fight to suppress the rebellion in the north, he rises up and attacks while we are not prepared. Tell me men, is this how war is fought?"
"NO!" They roared in reply.
"Tell me, do I not deserve to be the true King in the North?"
"YES!"
"Then we must prepare for war! War it is! The noble Yuan family does not turn down a fight when the going gets tough. We may have lost the first battle; but we will win the next one, and the next one, and the one after that. We are the true sons of Heaven, none can oppress us. Neither the King in the North, nor that fool Cao Cao. Those two do not understand the height of their folly - when a man fights for righteous purposes then none can stop him. We will entertain them. We will destroy the King in the North, and decimate Cao Cao's puny army. Prepare for war! We will march soon. The army of Heaven in on the prowl...!"
